Tesla China has announced a recall for 870 imported Model X units due to an issue with the vehicles’ roof trim panels. This recall affects Model X units produced between March 16, 2016, and July 31, 2016. The recall is similar to one announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the United States, affecting 9,136 units of the 2016 Model X.
The recall is a follow-up to a previous action in November 2020 when Tesla recalled the Model X due to insufficient primer on the vehicle’s roof trim panels. This could lead to weakened adhesion and the panels detaching from the vehicle. Some of the vehicles covered by the previous recall may still have received roof panels with the same issue, prompting Tesla China to reinspect the affected vehicles and perform a tension test on the roof panels to ensure proper adhesion. If the vehicles fail the test, new roof panels will be provided and installed free of charge.
Tesla first started selling vehicles in China in 2014 with the Model S sedan, followed by the Model X in 2016. While these vehicles were imported from the US, Tesla’s success in the Chinese market led to the establishment of Giga Shanghai, where mass-market vehicles like the Model 3 and Model Y are produced. Giga Shanghai has become Tesla’s largest factory by volume and primary vehicle export hub.
Customers who may be affected by the recall are encouraged to contact Tesla China for further information or to schedule an inspection of their vehicle. By addressing the issue with the roof trim panels, Tesla aims to ensure the safety and quality of its vehicles on the road. The company remains committed to providing top-notch service to its customers and addressing any potential concerns promptly and efficiently.
