The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall campaign for the Tesla Cybertruck on Sept. 26, affecting 27,185 2024 Cybertrucks with rearview cameras that have image delay issues. The delay in transmitting the image to the in-cabin display violates federal law and poses safety risks for drivers. The problem originates from the system not completing its shutdown process before being commanded to boot back up, causing a delay in displaying the rearview camera image within the required two-second timeframe when the vehicle is put in reverse, in violation of FMVSS 111, S6.23 standards.
Trucks that are affected by this issue may experience a delay in displaying the rearview camera image for up to 6 to 8 seconds while in reverse, resulting in a blank display. The problem mainly impacts trucks built between Nov. 13, 2023, and Sept. 14, 2024, operating with specific software logic for the low voltage hardware. Tesla became aware of the issue on Sept. 12 and conducted an internal assessment, leading to the decision to issue a recall. As of Sept. 25, Tesla has received 45 warranty claims and consumer-related complaints related to the issue but no reports of collisions or injuries.
To address the issue, Tesla began rolling out an over-the-air (OTA) software update on Sept. 19 to correct the rearview camera delay problem and ensure the camera displays properly with a two-second response time when the vehicle is in reverse. The automaker will send recall notifications to affected Cybertruck owners soon after Sept. 30 to inform them of the issue and schedule repairs. This marks the fifth recall for the Cybertruck, which has only been on sale for less than a year, with previous recalls addressing issues such as a faulty wiper motor, loose trim, and “trapped” accelerator pedals.
Despite the recalls, the Tesla Cybertruck remains a popular electric truck with a unique design and impressive performance features. The ongoing effort to address safety concerns through recalls and software updates demonstrates Tesla’s commitment to ensuring the safety and reliability of its vehicles. Customers who own affected Cybertrucks are encouraged to follow the instructions provided in the recall notification to have their vehicles serviced promptly to address the rearview camera delay issue and prevent any potential safety risks while driving. Tesla continues to work towards improving the quality and performance of its vehicles to maintain customer satisfaction and trust in its brand.
