The U.S. EV charging network Ionna is making significant progress in its infrastructure build-out, with plans to install tens of thousands of electric vehicle chargers over the next five years. The network recently announced that it is transitioning from public beta to a full-scale national release, following the opening of its first location and the conclusion of a successful testing program in 2024. This program involved over 4,400 charging sessions with more than 80 unique EV models, dispensing nearly 63,000 kwh of energy, to stress-test the network before ramping up its build-out efforts.

The network, established in 2023 as a potential rival to the Tesla Supercharger network in North America, has gained momentum as plans for the expansion of the Supercharger network have varied. Ionna now boasts over 100 contracted charging sites nationwide, with new locations recently announced in Houston, Texas; Abilene, Kansas; and Wilcox, Arizona. These sites will feature new tech features such as expanded Plug and Charge compatibility and Amazon “Just Walk Out” technology for convenience.
The first Ionna location is in Apex, N.C., referred to as a “Rechargery” located in a converted gas station. The network aims to have 1,000 new charging bays online by the end of the year, with a long-term goal of reaching 30,000 bays by 2030 as originally announced in 2023. Ionna uses the term “bays” to represent charging connectors, with each spot having multiple connectors that may be CCS or NACS compatible.
