U.K.-based Bedeo is introducing a Land Rover Defender EV conversion utilizing in-wheel motors from its subsidiary Protean Electric. This launch marks the beginning of Bedeo’s “Reborn Electric: Icons” series, which will see the company venture into the realm of electrified classic cars. The program is aimed at expanding Bedeo’s current business of electric van conversions and may lead to more contracts for its in-wheel motor technology.
The first Land Rover Defender EV conversion by Protean features a 75-kwh battery pack that delivers 153 miles of WLTP range, translating to approximately 110 to 125 miles in EPA-cycle tests. With a standard 22-kw AC onboard charger, the battery can be recharged in around five hours, while optional DC fast charging can accomplish the same in just 90 minutes, typically taking less time for an 80% charge. Bedeo promises to maintain the original curb weight and driving dynamics of the Defender through the use of in-wheel motors, thanks to the weight reduction and engineering enhancements they provide.
Despite the growing trend of converting older internal-combustion vehicles to electric power, Bedeo asserts that it is the first to incorporate in-wheel motors into such a conversion. Protean, the company behind the in-wheel motor technology, has been producing these motors for over a decade. Initially owned by a Chinese-funded automaker NEVS, which acquired Saab’s assets, Protean was later purchased by a U.K.-based firm. Chinese automaker Dongfeng, in partnership with Volkswagen, has utilized Protean motors in its Fengshen E70 sedan, claiming to have the world’s first passenger car homologated for sale with in-wheel motors.
