Audi is making significant advancements in electric vehicle technology with the development of the Premium Platform Electric (PPE), in collaboration with Porsche. The PPE platform aims to improve interior space, efficiency, and performance by redeveloping electric motors, power electronics, transmission, and high-voltage battery components specifically for battery electric vehicles. The PPE platform includes powerful and efficient electric motors, a high-voltage battery for impressive range suitable for everyday use, and a new E3 1.2 electronics architecture that enhances vehicle digitalization.
The electric motors for the PPE platform are designed to be more compact and efficient, resulting in 40 kilometers of extra range compared to previous generation electric vehicles from Audi. The motors are also lighter, requiring less installation space and utilizing new technology such as hairpin winding and direct oil-spray cooling to improve efficiency. The power electronics and transmission have also been enhanced to control the electric motors and convert direct current from the battery into alternating current for higher performance and efficiency.
The PPE platform features an 800-volt architecture that enables high charging performance, with a maximum charging power of 270 kW. The intelligent thermal management system predicts cooling or heating needs based on navigation data and driving behavior, optimizing battery performance and reducing charging times. The HV battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in just 21 minutes, providing a range of up to 255 kilometers under ideal conditions.
In addition to advancements in the drivetrain and charging technology, Audi has implemented innovations in vehicle thermal management, recuperation for energy recovery, and friction brakes in the Q6 e-tron. The thermal management system combines water-glycol and air heat pumps for efficient heating and cooling, while recuperation covers 95% of everyday braking processes. The new electronic architecture, E3 1.2, offers customers increased digitalization capabilities, including larger screens, wireless updates, and Functions on Demand.
The E3 1.2 architecture includes five high-performance computers that manage various vehicle functions and support over-the-air software updates. Audi’s focus on networking domain computers, control units, sensors, and actuators results in a future-proof electronic platform that reduces complexity and enhances security. The Q6 e-tron will be showcased at various events, including the Greentech Festival and Vivatech in Europe, highlighting Audi’s commitment to sustainable premium mobility and innovative electric vehicle technology.
