The EV industry giant BYD has partnered with XCMG, China’s largest producer of construction machinery, to launch three new battery models specifically designed for construction vehicles. These batteries, including the Super-hybrid, Super-fast charging, and Super-integration variants, are based on BYD’s lithium iron phosphate Blade battery technology. The collaboration with XCMG could give BYD an early advantage in the rapidly growing market for electric construction machinery.
The Super-hybrid battery pack offers a specific energy of 120 wh/kg, an energy capacity of 17.3 kWh, and a 4C charging rate. The Super-fast charging battery, on the other hand, features a charge and discharge current of 400 A, can operate at a voltage of up to 1,500 V, and has a lifespan of 7,000 charges. Despite a charge rate that some might not consider “super-fast,” BYD claims that a 10-minute charge can provide up to 1.5 hours of use. The Super-integration battery is designed for seamless integration into construction vehicles, with the ability to withstand six times as much vibration intensity as a standard battery pack.
While the individual battery capacities may seem relatively low, multiple packs can be installed in a single vehicle depending on requirements. All three battery types are designed to operate in extreme temperature conditions ranging from -40 to 65° C and at altitudes up to 5,500 meters. The batteries are also designed to be durable enough to withstand the intense vibration that construction machinery typically experiences. Mass production of these new battery models has already begun, and they are expected to be integrated into XCMG construction vehicles in the near future.
The partnership between BYD and XCMG represents a significant step towards the electrification of construction machinery, a segment that is seeing rapid growth and increasing interest in environmentally friendly solutions. By offering specialized battery solutions for construction vehicles, BYD is positioning itself as a leader in the evolving market for electric construction equipment. The collaboration also highlights the potential for innovative partnerships between established EV manufacturers and industry leaders in other sectors to drive the adoption of clean energy technologies.
The introduction of these new battery models tailored for construction machinery reflects the broader trend towards electrification in various industries. As more companies seek to reduce their carbon footprint and comply with stricter environmental regulations, the demand for electric alternatives in traditionally gas-powered sectors such as construction is likely to continue to increase. By developing specialized battery solutions that address the unique requirements of construction vehicles, BYD and XCMG are demonstrating their commitment to advancing sustainable transportation solutions and leading the transition to a cleaner, more efficient future. With the mass production of these batteries already underway, the collaboration between BYD and XCMG has the potential to drive significant innovation and accelerate the adoption of electric construction machinery on a global scale.
