In the 4th quarter of 2024, US electric vehicle sales increased by 15% compared to the same quarter in 2023. The Tesla Model Y and Model 3 continued to dominate EV sales, with the Honda Prologue climbing into 3rd place. The Chevy Equinox EV, named the 2024 CleanTechnica Car of the Year, was in 4th place, followed by the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Hyundai IONIQ 5. The Tesla Cybertruck led electric pickup truck sales, followed closely by the Ford F-150 Lightning.
In terms of market share by brand, Tesla held 44.9% of the market, which has been decreasing over time as more automakers enter the EV market. Ford came in second place for the 4th quarter, ahead of Chevrolet. The top 5 brands were followed by Honda, Hyundai, Rivian, BMW, and Kia. Further down the list, there were brands with very low sales volumes.
When looking at auto groups, Tesla remained at the top, with GM in second place, Hyundai-Kia in third, Ford Motor Co. in fourth, and Honda Motor Co. in fifth. Overall EV sales, Tesla sales, and non-Tesla EV sales all grew from Q4 2022 to Q4 2023, with a smaller increase from Q4 2023 to Q4 2024. The growth of non-Tesla EV sales was notably smaller in the latter time period.
The 4th quarter of 2024 saw strong performances from new arrivals like the Honda Prologue and Chevy Equinox, as well as from the Tesla Cybertruck, refreshed Tesla Model 3, and Chevy Blazer EV. The Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV9 also showed notable growth in Q4 2024, benefiting from year-over-year comparisons. The Tesla Cybertruck and Chevy Blazer EV saw dramatic percentage increases due to low sales in Q4 2023.
As a follow-up, 2024 sales will be further analyzed to identify key differences across the full year. CleanTechnica offers opportunities for readers to support independent cleantech coverage and stay connected with cleantech news through newsletters and the CleanTech Talk podcast.
