The Kamala Harris campaign is facing challenges as swing states are being called for Trump, and the remaining states are leaning his way. Despite this, there is hope that clean energy cannot be beaten by Trump. Looking back at Trump’s past failures to kill clean energy, such as not being able to exit the Paris Agreement or stop solar installations, provides confidence in the resilience of the clean energy sector. Even with control of the presidency, House of Representatives, and Senate in 2017 and 2018, Trump was unable to significantly hinder the progress of renewables.
The advantages of renewables, such as their lower cost compared to fossil fuels, make it difficult for Trump to beat them with government power. Taking drastic actions to give power back to fossil fuel companies would lead to increased electricity bills, job losses, and limited choices for consumers. Trump’s attempts to undermine renewables through executive actions and tariffs have failed in the past due to market forces and public demand for clean energy options. Removing subsidies and implementing bans on renewable technologies would face resistance from both consumers and free market Republicans.
While the idea of a dictator-like Trump posing a threat to clean energy cannot be ruled out entirely, there are practical limits to presidential power. Even in the most oppressive regimes, resistance movements and underground activities defy state control using modern technologies like encryption and off-grid energy production. Agorism, or counter-economics, enables individuals to resist authoritarian rule through small acts of defiance that accumulate over time, challenging the dictator’s authority. The ability to exchange value using cryptocurrency and communicate freely undermines attempts to suppress innovation and clean technologies.
Efforts to stop clean technology ultimately lead to the downfall of dictatorships, as violating people’s rights and eroding their freedoms undermines the legitimacy of a leader. By targeting private property, freedom of speech, freedom of movement, and the right to choose how to spend money, Trump would alienate a significant portion of the population and face opposition. When enough people decide to resist a tyrant, their power is diminished, and they are relegated to history’s dustbin. The resilience of clean technology and the demand for sustainable solutions make it difficult for oppressive leaders to fully eradicate clean energy options.
