Tesla has officially begun construction on its Shanghai Megafactory, marking the electric vehicle maker’s first dedicated energy storage facility outside of the United States. The Shanghai Megafactory will produce Megapack batteries and join Giga Shanghai as Tesla China’s main production facilities in the country. The complex covers about 200,000 square meters in the Lingang area, close to Gigafactory Shanghai.
Tom Zhu, Tesla senior vice president, stated that the Shanghai Megafactory will play a critical role in the company’s global battery storage strategy. With the Megapack designed for grid use, the facility is poised to be a significant contributor to the world’s transition to sustainable energy. This project stands as Tesla’s newest high-profile investment in the Chinese market since entering it ten years ago.
The Shanghai Megafactory is projected to have an annual capacity of 10,000 Megapack batteries, which equates to approximately 40 GWh of energy storage. This amount of Megapack batteries could power 50,000 Shanghai homes for a year. Production of Megapack batteries at the facility is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2025, less than a year from now.
The Megapack battery is Tesla’s flagship battery storage product, designed for grid use with a storage capacity of 3.9 MWh. This is enough to power 3,600 homes for an hour and is fully scalable, providing an alternative to traditional peaker plants. The buildout of the Shanghai Megafactory experienced some delays, with initial estimates for construction and production start dates being revised to begin in 2024.
Construction on the Shanghai Megafactory was expected to start in Q3 of 2023, with Megapack production beginning in Q2 of 2024. However, by April 2024, reports indicated that Tesla China revised the timeline to begin construction in May 2024 and start mass production in Q1 of 2025. The project received a construction permit from Shanghai authorities on May 16, officially paving the way for the facility’s buildout. Those with news tips can contact TeslaRati for updates.
