EVC, a leading electric vehicle (EV) charging company in the UK, has partnered with The Jockey Club, the country’s largest commercial horse racing organisation, to provide bespoke EV charging solutions at each of their 14 locations. EVC will be installing over 100 fast and rapid charge points across The Jockey Club’s venues, with recent installations at four racecourses and the remaining venues to have chargers installed before the end of 2024. This partnership aims to support The Jockey Club’s commitment to be carbon neutral by 2027 and future-proof their racecourses.
The collaboration comes as new research by ChargeUK highlights the importance of charging infrastructure in the UK’s transition to EVs, with a new public charge point being installed every 26 minutes on average in the last quarter. EVC secured a £165 million investment in February 2023 to accelerate its ambition to deliver up to 100,000 EV charge points across the UK. The funding has enabled the installation and securing of thousands of charging points across various venues, including hospitality, leisure, retail, workplaces, and residential units.
EVC will be installing the charge points at The Jockey Club’s race venues on a fully funded basis, handling the installation, management, and maintenance of the chargers at zero cost to the Club. The partnership reflects The Jockey Club’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, as they seek to enhance the guest experience, meet their sustainability objectives, and appeal to environmentally conscious racegoers and corporate clients. The initiative is also seen as a strategic investment in the future of mobility, particularly in underserved locations like the Northwest of England.
Each of The Jockey Club’s venues will have bespoke installations to meet their specific requirements and capabilities, providing both staff and visitors with convenient onsite EV charging. Of the 169 charge points to be installed, 91 will be active sockets, with 78 passive sockets allowing for additional chargers to be easily added as demand increases. The venues will have different charging tariffs, with reduced rates available through the EVC Plus app, which also offers flexible payment options, tracking of charging sessions, in-depth analysis, and remote charging control.
The partnership between EVC and The Jockey Club signifies a significant step towards sustainability and innovation within the horse racing industry. By providing convenient and efficient EV charging infrastructure at each racecourse, The Jockey Club demonstrates its commitment to safeguarding the legacy of its historic venues while adapting to the changing landscape of mobility. This collaboration not only enhances the guest experience but also contributes to the broader goal of reducing carbon emissions and transitioning towards a more sustainable future. With the continued growth of EV adoption in the UK, initiatives like this will play a crucial role in supporting the country’s EV charging infrastructure and encouraging the shift towards cleaner transportation options.
