Tesla Australia has recently joined the Australian Energy Council (AEC), becoming the group’s newest member. Tesla has been shipping Megapacks to various energy storage sites in Australia, with a 1,600MWh Megapack facility in Plumpton, Victoria set to be operational this year. The company is also working on expanding the Western Australia “Collie” battery, which will feature 2,240 MWh of Megapack storage upon completion of phase two. While Megapacks are currently built in the US at a Megafactory in California, Tesla has started production at a second Megafactory in Shanghai, China, which is expected to supply future energy projects in Australia. The company has hinted at plans for a third Megafactory, although the location is still unknown.
In addition to grid-scale Megapacks, Tesla also offers the Powerwall home-scale battery, which can store energy for households or commercial buildings and can deploy energy back to the grid. The company launched its next-generation Powerwall 3 in the Australian market last year. Tesla utilizes its network of Powerwall owners to create Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), allowing owners to sell electricity back to the grid during peak demand. These programs are being used in Australia and other markets worldwide, with over 100,000 Powerwalls participating in VPPs globally as of October.
