The popular Canter light-duty truck by Daimler Truck brand FUSO is undergoing a comprehensive update, with additional safety and comfort features as standard across the 6.0 t, 7.5 t, and 8.55 t variants. The interior has been redesigned, taking inspiration from the eCanter model, and now includes a 6.95-inch touchscreen radio with DAB+ radio reception and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. The Canter also boasts improved noise insulation, excellent visibility, and low entry height for drivers. Additionally, the fuel tank is now made of durable plastic, and on-board tools and jack are stored in external boxes on the frame.
In terms of safety, the new FUSO Canter features a range of sensors and cameras that work together with eight new or updated safety systems to protect occupants and road users from all directions. These systems include Active Brake Assist 6, Blind Spot Information System, Front Protection Assist, Attention Assist, and Intelligent Speed Assistance, among others. The Canter also includes a tire pressure monitoring system, a camera for rear visibility, and an Emergency Stop signal to prevent rear-end collisions. An interface for an alcohol immobilizer is also standard in the new model.
The eCanter, FUSO’s all-electric model, will also see updates in 2024, including cruise control and sequential turn signal LED taillights. The eCanter, known for its versatility, will now be available in even more variants, with 46 options to choose from and three different battery configurations on various wheelbases. New chassis configurations will also be introduced, allowing for the placement of the high-voltage battery in different positions to accommodate crane or pallet truck superstructures. The eCanter is produced for the European market in Portugal and for other markets in Japan.
Overall, the FUSO Canter has been a bestseller for over six decades, with over 4.5 million units produced worldwide since its launch in 1963. Known for its small turning circle, high payload capacity, and versatility, the Canter comes in five weight classes, three powerful engines, and three cab variants. The new updates aim to enhance the safety and comfort of the Canter while maintaining its reputation as a reliable and efficient light-duty truck option for various applications.
