September’s auto sales in Sweden showed plugin EVs at a 65.0% share, with full electric BEVs at a near-record 44.8% and plugin hybrids at 20.2%. Despite a slight increase in market share, BEV unit volumes were down 8% compared to the previous year. The Tesla Model Y was the best-selling BEV, with a volume greater than the next 9 models combined. PHEVs have maintained a steady market share of 19% to 26%, highlighting the need for more affordable BEV models and widespread fast-charging infrastructure to accelerate the EV transition.
Sweden is still in the mid-stage of the EV transition, with over a third of new car sales still consisting of plugless vehicles. PHEVs like the Volvo XC60, with relatively large batteries and significant electric-only range, continue to play a role in reducing emissions. Diesel-only vehicles reached a record low market share of 4.8% in September, reflecting a shift towards cleaner energy sources. The decline in diesel vehicles indicates a positive trend towards more sustainable transportation options in Sweden.
The Tesla Model Y dominated the BEV market in September, with a record volume of 4,126 units registered. Other popular models included the Tesla Model 3 and the Volvo XC40. The top 20 BEV rankings featured new debuts, such as the Porsche Macan, Peugeot e-5008, Cadillac Lyriq, and Mini Aceman, each offering unique features and battery options. The Volvo EX90 and Xpeng G6 also saw increases in volume, reflecting consumers’ interest in a variety of electric vehicle options.
In the longer-term rankings, the Tesla Model Y continued to lead the market, surpassing the next 4 BEV models combined in volume. The Skoda Enyaq and Volkswagen ID.7 showed improvement in rankings, while the Zeekr X and Audi Q6 e-tron were on track to break into the top 20. Despite the economic challenges impacting auto sales in 2024, the demand for BEVs in Sweden remains strong, with consumers seeking environmentally friendly and technologically advanced vehicles.
High prices for BEVs, combined with economic uncertainties, may hinder Sweden’s EV growth in the coming months. Legacy auto manufacturers continue to offer overpriced BEVs, limiting accessibility for consumers. In comparison, China leads in BEV adoption across all market segments, offering affordable electric vehicles below €10,000. As Sweden navigates the EV transition, addressing pricing barriers and expanding charging infrastructure will be crucial for accelerating the shift towards sustainable transportation.
