Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced that it will be buying back 2,760 2019 Jaguar I-Pace electric SUVs due to a fire risk that has not been adequately addressed in previous recalls. These vehicles were included in multiple recalls to address potential battery pack overheating issues, with the most recent recall being in late August. Despite previous attempts to remedy the issue with diagnostic software, Jaguar has determined that a buyback is necessary to ensure safety.
In the meantime, interim precautions have been put in place for owners of the affected vehicles. Owners are advised to park and charge their cars outside and away from structures. Additionally, they are being instructed to have dealers install updated battery module control software that limits capacity to 80%, a service that will be provided free of charge. Owner notification letters were sent out in October and November of 2024, and owners can contact Jaguar customer service for more information on the recall.
Jaguar initially issued a broader recall of I-Pace electric vehicles for fire risk last year, followed by a smaller recall earlier this year that included just 258 vehicles—all 2019 models. It was found that these vehicles had a higher likelihood of experiencing short-circuits within their battery cells, leading Jaguar to ultimately decide to replace entire battery packs. Despite these efforts to address the issue, Jaguar has now determined that a buyback is necessary to fully address the fire risk associated with the 2019 I-Pace models.
As Jaguar continues to focus on electric vehicles, the I-Pace will not be part of its future plans. The automaker will be abandoning its first electric model in favor of three new EVs based on a clean-sheet architecture. The styling for these new models has been previewed by a concept car that will be making its public debut on December 2nd. This decision reflects Jaguar’s commitment to innovation and the development of new electric vehicles that prioritize safety and performance.
