Lucid Motors has issued a recall for 1,539 Air Pure models of its electric sedan due to an issue that could result in a complete loss of drive power. The recall, which affects the 2024 and 2025 Lucid Air Pure electric vehicles, focuses on a rear subframe wiring harness that may be too short, causing strain on the electrical connection and resulting in power loss to the drive unit in these single-motor rear-wheel drive vehicles according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Drivers of the affected vehicles may experience a loss of propulsion and see dashboard warning messages if the condition occurs, which is caused by intermittent or lost communication with the drive unit due to strain on the wiring harness connector. While the power loss affects the drive unit, other accessories such as power steering, power brakes, displays, and turn signals are unaffected. Lucid decided to issue the recall after receiving reports of power loss in Air Pure models and investigating the issue, eventually attributing it to a “documentation change” that resulted in the incorrect ordering of rear subframe wiring harnesses that were too short.
The remedy for the issue involves replacing the affected wiring harnesses with ones of the correct length, a process that will be carried out by Lucid service centers at no cost to owners. Lucid has stated that it plans to send out owner notification letters regarding the recall on December 20, 2024, and owners can also contact the company’s customer service department for more information. The reference number for this recall is SR-24-05-0. It’s important to note that the recall only affects the Lucid Air Pure models and not the Touring, Grand Touring, and high-performance Sapphire versions of the vehicle.
Initially offered with a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain, the Lucid Air Pure rear-wheel drive model has consistently boasted more range than a Tesla Model S while also being priced lower, especially after price cuts were made to 2024 models earlier in the year. Lucid offers multiple versions of the Air, including the Touring, Grand Touring, and high-performance Sapphire models, none of which are affected by this recall. Overall, Lucid Motors is committed to addressing and rectifying issues promptly to ensure the safety and satisfaction of its customers.
