Mercedes-Benz recently teased a camouflaged prototype of a dedicated electric SUV made for its AMG performance division. AMG typically creates sportier versions of existing Mercedes models, but this will be the first SUV designed as an AMG model from scratch, and one of two planned EVs based on the new AMG.EA platform. The prototype showcases a sleek silhouette that was first hinted at in a sketch when the model was announced. Despite being an EV, AMG has included a large grille up front, along with a hood and headlights that curve around it.
The SUV is set to begin testing as scheduled, with plans to conduct cold-weather tests in the Arctic Circle, similar to the location where the first AMG.EA-based electric vehicle was tested earlier this year. It is expected that the other model, a fastback sedan, will debut in showrooms next year and possibly replace the current AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. The SUV is likely to follow shortly after. Both models are anticipated to utilize axial-flux motors from British company Yasa, which Mercedes acquired in 2021. Mercedes has also hinted at a new high-performance battery concept that will enable mixed cell types in EV batteries.
In addition to the two confirmed AMG.EA models, there are reports suggesting that AMG is considering an electric supercar based on the Vision One-Eleven concept unveiled in 2023. An AMG version of the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA EV is also in the works. The incorporation of cutting-edge technology and designs in these electric models demonstrate Mercedes’ commitment to advancing in the electric vehicle market. With the gradual shift toward electric vehicles globally, Mercedes is positioning itself as a key player in the luxury electric vehicle segment, catering to consumers who value performance and sustainability.
As Mercedes-Benz expands its electric vehicle offerings, the inclusion of dedicated AMG models showcases the brand’s commitment to performance and innovation in the EV market. By developing electric versions of its popular AMG models, Mercedes is catering to customers who desire both luxury and high-performance features in their vehicles. The use of advanced technology such as high-performance batteries and axial-flux motors sets Mercedes apart in the electric vehicle landscape, demonstrating its dedication to creating cutting-edge EVs that rival traditional combustion engine vehicles in terms of power and performance.
The anticipation surrounding the upcoming AMG electric SUV and other planned EV models reflects the industry-wide shift towards electric vehicles and the demand for luxury EV options. Mercedes’ decision to develop standalone electric models for its AMG division highlights the brand’s willingness to adapt to changing consumer preferences and embrace the future of automotive technology. By entering the electric vehicle market with high-performance offerings, Mercedes is poised to attract a new generation of consumers who value sustainability and innovation in their vehicles. The success of the upcoming AMG electric SUV and other electric models will likely shape Mercedes’ future direction in the EV market and solidify its position as a leader in luxury electric vehicles.
