Nio, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has launched a new brand called Onvo in China to compete with Tesla’s Model Y. The first vehicle under this brand, a small SUV called the L60, is set to start deliveries later this month and will be approximately 17 percent cheaper than the base Model Y offering in China. With a starting price of 206,900 yuan, or $29,267, the L60 is around 43,000 yuan, or $6,084 less expensive than the Model Y.
One of the key features of the Onvo L60 is its impressive range of 555 kilometers or 344 miles on a full charge, which is comparable to the Model Y’s Long Range configuration. However, Onvo will differentiate itself by offering battery-swap technology alongside traditional charging infrastructure. The CEO, Ai Tiecheng, believes that battery swap is a safer and more reliable option than regular charging. While Tesla previously experimented with battery swaps, they ultimately decided to focus on expanding their Supercharger Network instead.

Customers will pay a one-time charge of 149,900 yuan, or $21,208, followed by a monthly fee of 599 yuan, or $84.75. Onvo is planning to aggressively expand its sales presence by opening 200 stores across 120 cities in China by the end of the year.
