Rivian has announced that it is expanding sales of its electric vans beyond just Amazon, its original customer for commercial vehicles. Initially exclusive with Amazon, Rivian is now opening sales to other fleet customers after working with several large fleets to lay the groundwork. The mass-market version of the electric van, now called the Rivian Commercial Van, is available in two configurations – the 500 and 700 – priced at $82,900 and $86,900, respectively. Amazon currently has more than 20,000 of these vans in its fleet.
The Rivian Commercial Van is powered by a single motor providing 320 hp and 299 lb-ft of torque, with a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack offering up to 161 miles of range in the 500 model and 160 miles in the 700 model. The van is front-wheel drive and comes with a CCS connector for DC fast-charging, providing 100 kw of charging power. The van also offers an AC charging rate of 11 kw. Both the 500 and 700 models have a GVWR of 9,500 pounds, with the 500 model offering 487 cubic feet of cargo space and a payload rating of 2,663 pounds, while the 700 model provides 652 cubic feet of cargo space and a payload rating of 2,258 pounds.
While Rivian is expanding its reach in the electric van market, other automakers like Ram, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, and General Motors also offer electric van options. Many of these van offerings are electrified versions of existing combustion designs. On the other hand, General Motors’ Chevrolet BrightDrop vans and Mercedes’ upcoming Van.EA electric vans are based on dedicated electric platforms. Rivian has plans to adopt the Tesla NACS connector for its passenger vehicles in the future but will use a CCS connector for its Commercial Vans.
Rivian initially partnered with Amazon to produce electric vans, and now the partnership has resulted in over 20,000 vans in Amazon’s fleet. However, Rivian is now expanding sales to other fleet customers, offering the Rivian Commercial Van in two configurations. The vans are priced at $82,900 and $86,900, respectively, and offer up to 161 miles of range from a 100kwh LFP battery pack. These vans are front-wheel drive with a single motor and come with a CCS connector for fast charging.
The electric van market is becoming increasingly competitive, with various automakers offering electric van options. While some, like Ford and Mercedes-Benz, offer electrified versions of existing combustion designs, others like Rivian and General Motors are developing dedicated electric platforms for their van offerings. Rivian’s Commercial Vans are powered by a single motor and come with both DC fast-charging and AC charging capabilities. With the arrival of the Rivian Commercial Van, fleet customers beyond Amazon now have the opportunity to integrate electric vans into their operations.
Rivian’s expansion of its electric van sales beyond Amazon is a significant step for the company as it looks to establish itself in the commercial vehicle market. The Rivian Commercial Van offers competitive pricing and range compared to other electric van options on the market. With Amazon already incorporating a large number of Rivian vans into its fleet, other fleet customers now have the opportunity to experience the benefits of electric vehicles for their logistics operations. This move also highlights the increasing demand for electric vehicles in the commercial sector and the growing competition among automakers to meet this demand.
