Tesla Shifts Cybertruck Production Staff to Build Model Ys
In a strategic move, Tesla has relocated part of its Cybertruck production staff to work on building Model Y vehicles. The decision came after the Cybertruck line workers were given the option in December to switch from working on Cybertruck production to Model Y production. However, not enough workers ultimately opted to move to the Model Y production line, leading to some individuals being "forced to switch over" according to reports from inside the company.
Cybertruck Sales Decline and Impact on Production
Despite an initially successful launch, Tesla’s Cybertruck faced a decline in demand after clearing its backlog of orders. This decline became apparent in early December of 2024 when Cybertruck line workers were asked not to come to work for three days. An internal memo sent to employees hinted at upcoming team changes in January and requested input from workers on their work assignment preferences, leading to the eventual decision to transfer some Cybertruck production staff to the Model Y assembly line.
Shifting Production Priorities at Tesla
The survey distributed to employees at Tesla’s Austin factory indirectly acknowledged the decreasing need for Cybertruck production by stating, "As we continue to assess schedules to meet business needs, we’ll be making a change to Model Y and Cyber schedules, and we want to ensure that your preferences are considered." Despite this, the lack of worker interest in transitioning to Model Y production prompted the company to make some employees switch over to the new assembly line.
Preparing for Increased Model Y Demand
With the Model Y gaining popularity and projected to become the world’s best-selling vehicle for the second consecutive year, Tesla is anticipating increased demand. The refreshed model, which includes features like a physical turn signal stalk, is likely to attract even more customers.
