Tesla Full Self-Driving (FSD) users have collectively driven over 1.3 billion miles, with this number expected to increase as more drivers take advantage of and potentially subscribe to FSD. The company hinted at this in their Q1 2024 Update Letter and earnings call. Tesla emphasized the effectiveness of a vision-based approach to autonomy, using cameras and AI, especially following the launch of FSD (Supervised) V12. This advancement helped push Tesla’s cumulative FSD miles over 1 billion.
One of the factors contributing to the increase in FSD usage is Tesla’s decision to offer the service as a $99 per month subscription, making it more accessible to customers. Elon Musk mentioned during the Q1 2024 earnings call that the number of FSD miles has been rapidly increasing, with the rollout of Supervised FSD V12. Approximately half of the 1.8 million vehicles equipped with FSD have been utilizing the service, with the percentage of users steadily rising each week. Musk emphasized the success of the vision-based approach with end-to-end neural networks for scalable autonomy.
Tesla owners are now driving an average of 14.7 million miles on FSD per day, a significant increase from just three months prior. It took Tesla 3.5 years to reach their first billion miles on FSD, but another 300 million miles were achieved in just a few months. This speed of data collection is a significant milestone for Tesla’s autonomous driving efforts, and it would not be surprising if FSD reaches 2 billion cumulative miles in the near future.
Tesla’s first-quarter results were well-received by investors, with shares rising 13.33% in after-hours trading. The company will be unveiling a dedicated Robotaxi, referred to as the “Cybercab,” on August 8, 2024, as part of their focus on autonomy. Tesla’s efforts in advancing autonomous driving technology and collecting real-world data through FSD are contributing to their success and positive reception from both customers and investors.
