The test involved a 2019 Tesla Model S Standard Range, which still had its original 75 kWh battery and had accumulated over 250,000 miles. Despite its age and mileage, the vehicle proved to be a reliable road tripping machine.
The Out of Spec team used a 2019 Tesla Model S Standard Range for the test, which had an original EPA range rating of 285 miles per charge. The vehicle was purchased for less than $10,000 with incentives and Full Self-Driving capability. The test involved running the Model S Standard Range from full charge to zero at 70 mph on the highway, despite suboptimal conditions such as 20 mph winds and temperatures ranging from the 40s to the 50s.
Despite the challenging conditions, the 2019 Model S Standard Range was able to travel 203 miles at 70 mph before the test was concluded. The vehicle consumed 57.8 kWh of its battery during the test, achieving an impressive efficiency of 3.6 miles per kWh. This efficiency was close to that of a new Model 3 Performance, which achieved 3.8 miles per kWh during a similar range test conducted by the Out of Spec team.
A recent study published in Nature has highlighted Tesla’s vehicles as industry leaders in longevity and mileage. According to the study, Tesla electric vehicles are expected to cover an average of 204,000 miles over their lifetime, surpassing all other brands regardless of powertrain. The study also estimated the average lifespan of electric vehicles to be 20.3 years, with Tesla vehicles leading the way.
