Rivian, an electric vehicle (EV) maker, recently introduced a new software update that includes a hands-off driving assistance system called Enhanced Highway Assist for its Gen 2 R1T and R1S vehicles. The update also includes a performance upgrade and several other improvements. The Enhanced Highway Assist allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel for extended periods, similar to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving feature. The system controls steering, acceleration, and braking, and uses an infrared cabin camera to monitor driver attention. It is available for use on 135,000 miles of highway in North America.
Rivian’s autonomy program features a multimodal suite of 11 cameras and five radars, providing sensor redundancy and a 360-degree view. The company’s cameras have the highest resolution of any vehicle in North America, and its radar systems are designed to detect objects over long distances and in low-visibility conditions. In addition to the Enhanced Highway Assist, Rivian also introduced a $5,000 Performance Upgrade for Dual-Motor vehicles with the Standard+, Large, and Max battery packs. This upgrade unlocks 665 horsepower and 829 lb.-ft. of torque and adds three new drive modes: Sport, Rally, and Soft Sand, in addition to the existing All-Purpose, All-Terrain, and Snow modes. The upgrade can be purchased through the Rivian mobile app and downloaded to the vehicle via an over-the-air (OTA) software update.
The Performance Dual-Motor vehicles also received Rally Mode, which offers heightened throttle response and crisper steering on various terrains. Owners now have the option to change the wheel type in the settings menu for improved range estimates. Rivian has also added features like Go Chime, which notifies drivers when a stopped vehicle ahead starts moving, and Side Mirror Auto-Tilt on Reverse, which automatically tilts the side mirrors downward to aid in parallel parking. Drivers can now control their charging port door remotely through the mobile app and receive proactive alerts for tire punctures and slow leaks.
