Senator Richard Blumenthal has called out a contract between Tesla and the U.S. Government for $400 million worth of armored electric vehicles, despite the fact that the issues surrounding the contract have already been resolved. Tesla’s name was initially listed in the U.S. Department of State’s Procurement List, but CEO Elon Musk stated that he was not aware of being named in the contract and the company’s name has since been removed from the document.
Despite these clarifications, Senator Blumenthal wrote a letter to the U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, challenging the contract, its amount, and what he perceived as a conflict of interest due to Musk’s dual roles and the supposed shortcomings of the Cybertruck. Blumenthal criticized the State Department’s choice of the Cybertruck for the contract, citing recalls and poor sales numbers as reasons why it may not be a reliable vehicle.
However, the claims made by Blumenthal can be challenged. Many of the issues with the Cybertruck have been addressed through Over-the-Air software updates, making it more reliable and efficient. Additionally, despite reports of “disastrous” sales numbers, the Tesla Cybertruck was the best-selling EV pickup in the U.S. in 2024, surpassing the Ford F-150 Lightning, and was the fifth-best-selling EV overall in the country last year.
Senator Blumenthal is requesting a response from Secretary of State Rubio by February 21 regarding the contract with Tesla. Despite the concerns raised by Blumenthal, it appears that the issues surrounding the contract have been resolved and the Tesla Cybertruck has proven itself to be a successful and popular vehicle in the EV market. The controversy surrounding the contract may ultimately be unfounded, as Tesla continues to innovate and provide reliable electric vehicles to consumers.
