Xpeng, a Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker, is set to launch its next-generation supercharger later this quarter, offering even faster charging speeds. The company’s latest S5 liquid-cooled supercharging station, expected to come online in the third quarter of 2024, will deliver up to 800 kW of charging power. This new supercharger has a maximum output current of 800 A and a maximum output voltage of 1,000 V, enabling a one-second charge for over one kilometer of range. Xpeng’s chairman and CEO, He Xiaopeng, announced the details of the S5 supercharger at a technology event, where he highlighted the efficiency and speed benefits of the new charging technology.
The upcoming S5 supercharger by Xpeng will take less than 13 seconds from plugging in the vehicle to initiating charging, significantly reducing the time spent during the charging process. Users will be able to track the latest S5 site information through various channels, including the Xpeng App and mini-programs. With this new technology, Xpeng aims to provide more than 300 km of range in as little as five minutes of charging, marking a significant improvement in charging efficiency compared to its current superchargers. By the end of July, Xpeng had 1,300 charging stations in operation, with plans to expand to 10,000 self-operated charging stations by 2026, including 4,500 liquid-cooled ultrafast charging stations.
Nio, another major player in the Chinese EV market, unveiled its fourth-generation battery swap station and next-generation 640-kW superchargers at Nio Day 2023. The company has already put the new battery swap stations and superchargers into operation, offering a maximum charging power of 640 kW and a maximum output current of 765 A. With this technology, Nio’s 100-kWh long-range battery packs can be charged from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 12 minutes. Li Auto is also actively building charging facilities to support the launch of more battery electric vehicle (BEV) models. The company currently has 701 supercharging stations, with plans to expand to over 2,000 stations by the end of this year and more than 5,000 by the end of 2025.
